Verdict
RESHAPEHow the council got there
Meta built an AI agent to shop for you. Two weeks in, the biggest shop on earth locked the door.
The Wrecking Ball
finds the one fatal flaw
An agent that shops on other people's stores lives or dies by their permission. Muse never asked. Amazon said no on a Sunday.
The Dreamer With A Calculator
finds the realistic upside
The prize is real. The assistant that handles life's admin is worth $20 to $100 a month to millions of people, and Meta priced it exactly there.
The Toddler
strips the borrowed assumptions
But why would a store let an agent it cannot see use logins it has stored? But why would I trust it with a card when its Mac app had a privilege escalation bug in week two?
The Receipts
no opinions, only sourced facts
Launched 8 Sep, $20 Power and $100 Maximum tiers, US only. Amazon blocked it on 21 Sep, citing no authorisation, no self-identification and stored customer credentials. Amazon's own Buy for Me agent shops other retailers' sites on an opt-out basis. Shopify signed a Muse partnership on 22 Sep and its stock rose over 7%. Third-party agents are about 0.4% of Amazon traffic.
The Wallet
the buyer, deciding whether to pay
I would pay $20 for an agent that finishes the job. I will not pay $20 for one that gets bounced at the checkout of the one store I actually use.
Muse is a distribution deal wearing an agent costume. Sign the retailers first, then ship the agent.
Buyer named, assumptions listed, price set. The fatal assumption, that retailers would tolerate an unidentified agent, was tested by launching. That is the expensive way to run a test.
Before launch: ask the ten largest retailers in writing whether an identified agent may transact on a customer's behalf. Count the yeses. Ship to those.
